Rabbi Yisroel Lewkowicz

Director of Jewish Life/Ivrit

Rabbi Yisroel (Billy) Lewkowicz, originally from South Africa, has devoted more than four decades to Jewish education, bringing passion, creativity, and heart to every role he has undertaken. After moving to the United States 31 years ago, he has continued to inspire students, families, and communities through both formal and informal educational initiatives.

Rabbi Lewkowicz began his teaching journey in Kfar Chabad, Israel, and has since taught at a number of distinguished institutions: Yeshiva College (South Africa) for 10 years, King David Schools (South Africa) for 3 years, Tucson Hebrew Academy where he served as Judaic Director for 29 years, Pardes Jewish Day School for 2 years, and currently, Phoenix Hebrew Academy, where he teaches Ivrit (Hebrew) in grades 2 through 8 and serves as Director of Student Life.

Beyond the classroom, Rabbi Lewkowicz has been a dynamic leader in informal Jewish education. His initiatives include the Tzivos Hashem youth program in Kfar Chabad, serving as Youth Director for the Glenhazel Shul in Johannesburg, coordinating Bnei Akiva youth programming, and leading the Department of Informal Education for the South African Board of Jewish Education. Notably, he created and led Streetwise, a groundbreaking program that connected students from King David School with homeless children in Johannesburg. This initiative earned national recognition and was honored with a medal of distinction from President Nelson Mandela.

Rabbi Lewkowicz is widely recognized for his engaging storytelling, warmth, and innovative programming, receiving multiple awards from educational institutions and a special commendation from the Mayor of Tucson for his contributions to community enrichment through Jewish storytelling.

At the heart of Rabbi Lewkowicz’s educational philosophy is a deep belief in the power of love, wisdom, and understanding. “A simple smile,” he says, “opens the door to endless possibilities—of kindness, connection, and meaningful growth.”

He continues to bring his unwavering dedication and joy to the students of Phoenix Hebrew Academy, nurturing not only their knowledge but also their souls.
